SAIEG South African Institute for Engineering
& Environmental Geologists
Welcome to The South African Institute for Engineering and Environmental Geologists
What is SAIEG?
SAIEG is a national voluntary group which represents natural scientists practicing in the field of engineering and environmental geology. It has gained recognition as a Natural Scientific Association from SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions) and is affiliated to the following international associations:
- The IAEG (International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment) as the South African group
- The AEG (Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists) in the USA through its local chapter which was established in 1970
What is engineering geology?
Engineering geology is the application of the geological sciences to engineering practice for the purpose of assuring that the geologic factors affecting the location, design, construction, operation and maintenance of engineering works are recognized and adequately provided for. Engineering geologists investigate and provide geologic and geotechnical recommendations, analysis, and design associated with human development.
What is environmental geology?
Environmental geology applies the findings of geologic research to the problems of land use and civil engineering. It is closely allied with urban geology and deals with the impact of human activities on the physical environment.
