Understand geosynthetics in soil reinforcement and the design in steep slopes, retaining walls and roads to improve performance and reduce maintenance

Overview

This three-day course aims to introduce geosynthetics materials, their use in steep slope and vertical walls, embankment foundation and pavements; from basics of theory to practical applications, using first principles to free software which will be given during the course.

Course Outline

• Introduction to geosynthetics material for soil reinforcement, short and long-term strength, criteria for assessment of geosynthetics
• Soil reinforcement principles, soil – geosynthetics interactions
• Design of walls and steep slopes, facings, drainage, foundation and reinforcement, design approaches (SANS 207 and BS 8006)
• Design of embankments over soft soil, over piles and spanning over sinkholes
• Design of pavement structure, subgrade improvement, reduction of pavement thickness, asphalt reinforcement
