President’s
Message
With the issue of this, the first newsletter of 2013, I’m
glad to see we are back on track to providing you with a bi-annual
newsletter. The first newsletter of the year is
scheduled for issue shortly after the SAIEG AGM and Gala Dinner as well
as the first council meeting for the year. This
issue also coincides with my first term as President of SAIEG. I’d like to thank our past president
for captaining the SAIEG ship over
the past two years. The seas were luckily not
too rough and I’m hoping the relatively calm weather prevails during my 2
year tenure as President. Thank you to those who
provided your vote of confidence in me. I’m
looking forward to the challenges which lie ahead and hope to live up to
the honourable reputations of the 14 past presidents of SAIEG.

Shale Sinkhole
Sinkholes
are only expected to occur within the dolomites of the Chuniespoort Group. The
overlying Pretoria Group should under normal circumstances provide
protective cover. Especially in the case below
where it is 190m thick. On the 5th of
December 2012 a 25m deep sinkhole occurred in a storm water drainage
canal, astonishingly ingesting several metres of ferruginous shale of the
Timeball Hill Formation underlying the
residential establishment Hillshaven situated
on the Far West Rand… Read more

Gold Award
The SAIEG Gold Medal Award is SAIEG’s
premier award. It is given in recognition of
outstanding lifelong service by an individual to the profession of
Engineering and Environmental Geology in South Africa. The
award is given to a senior member of SAIEG, and in exceptional
circumstances, may be presented to a person who is not a member. This year we were pleased to award it to a
longstanding SAIEG member, Mr Isak Venter during the Gala Dinner on 1
March 2013.

Student Awards & Sponsorships
Students nominated by Lecturers from TUKS and KZN and elected by
SAIEG council to receive a prize, will receive their price at the
university rather than the SAIEG Gala Dinner, since travelling to the
event may be a problem for some of the students. The intention is to hand
over the prize, which will comprise a book voucher, during the graduation
ceremony.
Still under discussion, it is proposed
that SAIEG will provide field trip sponsorship to TUKS
and KZN students. A
brief report back of the trip will then be prepared by the students and
published on in the newsletter and on our webpage.

Membership Application Forms
I’m not sure
if you remember when you first filled in your application form, or
perhaps you’ve recently assisted one of your new staff, but I’m sure you’ll
agree that they could be a bit more user-friendly. A
revamp is currently underway and we hope to have it finalized during the
first half of this year.
A student
membership form which we’d created in 2011 has been hugely successful in
putting students in touch with SAIEG right from the word go. These forms are provided to students at the
University road shows as well as through the lecturers.
