Note from the Editor
We are
up and running into 2015 and it’s already April, 2015 is already flying
by. I look forward to another year
as editor of the newsletter and I will do my best to keep communications
regular. I hope that 2015 is a
good and successful year for SAIEG and for all of us!

President’s
Message
A belated greeting for 2015 to all of my fellow members of
SAIEG as we quickly move into the second quarter of the year. Although this is the first newsletter of the year,
we have already been active with one Council meeting and our AGM and
Awards function being held early in March. I
would like to take this opportunity of thanking Richard for handing over
SAIEG to me, as the new President for 2015/2016, in a good state and I
will try to maintain and even improve our Institution. We
have some new faces on Council and I welcome them and trust that they
will get as much out of growing SAIEG as an important part of our
professional lives as they put in.
Council plans to get on track as soon as possible with
various evening talks and possibly a site visit during the year and I
would request anyone who has been involved with any particularly
interesting projects and who would like to share their experiences with
other members to come forward and make yourself available for a short
presentation. Similarly, anyone busy with a
project that could provide an interesting day or half-day outing is
welcome to contact Council and we can make the necessary arrangements.
I see a hectic time ahead where the Council will be busier
than usual until September 2016 in the organisation of the engineering
geological sessions at the 35th International Geological Congress, which
will take place in Cape Town between the 27th August and 4th September
next year (only 17 months away and so much to do). Please
diarise these dates and try not to miss out on this event – having
attended a number of these over the past 30 years or so, I ca assure you
that it will be a conference to remember.
Council continues to be engaged with various bodies such as ECSA, SABS, the Competition Commission and SACNASP to ensure that our rights as engineering
geologists (and particularly those who are in the consulting fraternity),
are not impinged on by “rules and regulations” instituted by other
organisations and that we can continue to operate in an open and contributory
manner to these organisations. Similarly our
interactions with SABS, specifically with respect to the improvement and
development of standards, will continue such that we can provide the best
service to our employers and colleagues.
Wishing you all a busy and enjoyable period ahead,
Phil Paige-Green

Regional Report Backs
|
|
|
KZN
There are a lot of larger projects still suspended
in the ethers, such as the new dug-out harbour and surrounding
infrastructure, new roads / lanes on the freeways to facilitate
additional truck traffic from the extended harbour, etc.
There have been large housing / mixed use developments coming
through, particularly in the northern reaches of eThekwini region, and
plenty of smaller municipal infrastructure upgrades (notably clinic
additions – can hear those election bells)… Read more

Eastern Cape
The
Eastern Cape continues to be a region of mixed blessings for the work of
our members. The slow pace of development and
delayed implementation of large-scale infrastructure makes for
challenging conditions within the industry, however this is offset
against the fewer numbers of Professionally Registered Members in the
Eastern Cape… Read

FINDING DIP AND STRIKE USING Google™earth
Recently
while looking at a possible slope stability problem, I needed to
determine the dip and strike of the bedrock in the area in relation to
the direction of the affected road. My first recourse was to Google™earth (as usual) and I came up with the
following method. This only works if there is a
suitable unique outcrop that can be traced appropriately in the image. It may be possible in some areas to use outcrops
some distance away, as long as the general topography and geology is
uniform… Read more

SAIEG AGM & Gala
Dinner
SAIEG held the 31st AGM and Gala Dinner on the 13th
March. The event began with the Annual
General Meeting which included a message from the President, a financial
review, reportbacks from the various provinces
and International societies. The
minutes of the meeting will be posted on the website once they are
available. No awards were given
out this year but a lovely evening was enjoyed by all. A very interesting talk given by Polar
Racer Lee Swan was entitled “The secret life of polar bears essential
lessons from Arctic Giants.”
