SAIEG NEWSLETTER

  Note from the Editor

2017 is already in full swing and time is flying by. This will be my last newsletter but i pass the newsletter baton into very capable hands. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing the newsletter but i think that after five years it is time to move onto other things. I wish every one of you a great year filled with successes!

  President's Message

At the start of my 2-year term as the 17th SAIEG President, holding this position for a second time (I also served as President for the 1995/96 term as the 6th President since the establishment of SAIEG in 1985), it is indeed still an honour, but also an enormous responsibility to look after the professional matters of SAIEG members.

There are several challenges, including the implementation of the CPD system, the issue of professional registration and reservation of work (specifically the problems emerging from the SAICE vs ECSA saga) and the constant transgression into our field by non-registered individuals and groups.

I am looking forward to working with a young and transformed council and urge each member to become involved in Institute matters and professional affairs as we are very small in terms of numbers, but play a pivotal role in the infrastructure development on the continent.

Your support and input are essential to deal with all the challenges facing us, but more importantly, promoting our profession at all levels (government to the man in the street) should be one of our prime objective and something that each member can contribute to.

Louis van Rooy

Regional Report Backs

  Eastern Cape

The past year has seen a fair amount of activity in the Eastern Cape, although projects have been impacted by slowdowns in some areas.

SANRAL’s expenditure in the Province has resulted in a large amount of road work, with some of our members reporting high levels of engagement with SANRAL projects. Many of the sites are situated in remote parts of the Province, ensuring vehicles and boots get regularly muddied. A range of significant structures are also included in some of these works, ensuring an interesting opportunity for fairly detailed geotechnical studies. Read more

  KZN

There has been quite a bit happening in KZN in the past while supplemented by work further north.

Very locally in the greater Durban area there has been a lot coming out of eThekwini Municipality in the past few months with drilling for new or widened bridges on the Rapid Bus Transport routes, numerous upgrades to electricity substations (including one extensive one on an unstable slope), and the ever pressing RDP and GAP housing general site investigations. SANRAL is also in the process of massive intersection upgrades on the N2 (Umhlanga to Mdloti) and N3 (Hammarsdale) with local geotechs giving input on high rock cuttings and bridge founding.

Feedback was received from 2 local consultants. Read more

  Limpopo

Construction Works is entering its eleventh year at Eskom’s new Medupi Power Station, with the first two units, Unit 6 and 5 complete and in service, commissioning of the third unit, Unit 4, underway and construction of the remaining units (units 3 – 1) in various stages of completion. Construction of the first phase of the Mokolo and Crocodile Water Transfer Scheme to transfer water from the Mokolo Dam to the Lephalale area for use by Medupi Power Station, the various coal mining expansions in the area and the Lephalale community at large, is nearing completion. The second phase of the water transfer scheme, to transfer water from the Crocodile River catchment to the Lephalale area, is in progress. The first phase comprised the construction of a 43km long pipeline from Mokolo Dam to Lephalale and the second phase require the construction of a 160km pipeline from Thabazimbi to Lephalale.   AEG 60th Anniversary

In 1970 there were 30 engineering geologists practicing in South Africa and the time had come to establish a professional society. Some had been participating in the Division of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering of the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) but a separate society to cater specifically for the professional needs of engineering geologists was needed.

Three of the engineering geologists (John Weaver, Bernard Kraft and Monte van Schalkwyk) were already members of the Association of Engineering Geologists in the USA. An initial ‘pursuance committee made up of these three AEG members, Konrad Clauss and Mick Mountain explored a few avenues to get a separate society started and their efforts culminated in the formation of the AEG South African Section which had its first meeting on 22nd February 1972. (Introduction extracted from “A Century of Geological Endeavor in Southern Africa: 1895-1995. Editor: Carl R Anhaeusser, Publisher: Linden: Geological Society of South Africa, (1997.)

There is no question that AEG at the time provided a home for us and did a lot for South African engineering geology. We still retain our ties with AEG and must always be grateful for the home they provided to us from the early 1970’s. Read more

Note from Council for Geosciences

Submission of dolomite stability reports to centralised database

The Council For Geoscience’s (CGS) dolomite database is a tool meant to aid the industry and general public. It helps provide valuable information and avoid duplication of investigations. Therefore this is a plea for Consultants to please submit your reports to the CGS, even if you do not require comment. We can indicate reports as confidential if requested, so that the enquirer has to contact the Consultant involved for the information, but at least we will all know an investigation has taken place.

You will all concede that you have made use of the Council For Geosciences (CGS) dolomite database during the years, therefore graciously allow others to have that same benefit.

Please submit to Lindy Heath lheath@geoscience.org.za

Backfilling of boreholes after dolomite stability investigations

It has been brought to the attention of the Council For Geoscience, that in some instances, percussion boreholes are not being backfilled or not backfilled according to standards. The Competent Person should make sure this is done for each site that he/she is responsible for. Unfilled boreholes can act as water conduits and lead to sinkhole/subsidence formation.

33rd Annual General Meeting and Gala Dinner News

The 33rd AGM and Gala Dinner was hosted by SAIEG on the 3rd of March 2017. It commenced with the AGM at 17:00 in the afternoon with the Gala Dinner at 19:00 in the evening. The guest speaker was Mr Manglin Pillay, the CEO of SAICE. He spoke on the importance of Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers working together in ensuring ground conditions are safe for any infrastructure development in the country and the continent at large.

The recipient of this year’s SAIEG Gold Medal Award was Dr Peter Day. Dr Day has had a lifelong contribution on the geotechnical engineering profession both in South Africa and internationally. In recognition of his contribution to the industry, SAIEG awarded him the Gold Medal. He has been awarded the South African Geotechnical Medal by the Geotechnical Division in 2005 and was elected as an Honorary Fellow of SAICE in 2010. In March 2013, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Engineering by the University of Stellenbosch. He was introduced by Mr Gavin Wardle. For more photos of the evening click here
