Membership Types & Applications

The following membership types are available. Existing members looking to set up their online profile, please select the 'Existing Member' option.

Fellows shall have been a member of the Institute for at least two years, be not less than thirty-six years of age, be actively engaged as an engineering and / or environmental geologist for not less than ten years, have held for not less than three years a position of such responsibility as in the opinion of the Council justifies his / her election, hold a degree or other academic qualification in engineering and / or environmental geology recognized by the Council, and have participated in conferences and lecture courses, published papers and have generally promoted engineering and environmental geology in South Africa.

Members shall hold a degree or other academic qualification in engineering and / or environmental geology recognized by the Council, shall be a Registered Natural Scientist in terms of Act No 55 of 1982, shall be actively engaged as an engineering and / or environmental geologist and have had at least three years practical training and experience in engineering and / or environmental geology.

  1. Study the definitions of classes of corporate membership and ensure that you meet the requirements for the class of membership you intend to apply for.
  2. Find two persons who know you well professionally, who are familiar with your career and achievements and who are prepared to act as Supporters of your Fellowship application. Two of these must be accredited Fellows of the Institute.
  3. Provide each of your supporters with a confidential Supporters Form (Download Supporters Form) and ask them to complete them and submit them directly to the Council. Follow up to ensure that these forms are submitted.
  4. Complete FORM A (Download Form A).
  5. Submit the completed FORM A to the Council.
  6. Together with FORM A submit certified copies of certificates of your relevant degrees and diplomas and qualifications to the Council.
  7. Also submit proof of your current professional registration as a Natural Scientist in terms of Act No. 55 of 1982 or as a Natural Science Technologist in terms of Act No. 106 of 1993 together with FORM A.

  7. Also submit proof of your professional registration as a Natural Scientist in terms of Act No. 55 of 1982 together with FORM A.

Candidate Members shall have successfully completed a degree or other qualification in engineering and / or environmental geology or geology recognized by the Council, shall be employed full-time in the field of engineering and / or environmental geology (where necessary under the supervision of a mentor who is a member or fellow of the Institute).

A Candidate member should apply as Member within 3 years, after which they will automatically become Candidate Qualified. The membership fees of Candidate Qualified are equivalent to that of Member, but Member status is not provided.

  1. Study the definitions of classes of corporate membership and ensure that you meet the requirements for the class of membership you intend to apply for.
  2. Find one person who is a Member or Fellow of SAIEG and who is prepared to act as Supporters of your Associate Membership application.
  3. Provide each of your supporters with a confidential Supporters Form (Download Supporters Form) and ask them to complete them and submit them directly to the Council. Follow up to ensure that these forms are submitted.
  4. Complete FORM A (Download Form A).
  5. Submit the completed FORM A to the Council.
  6. Together with FORM A submit certified copies of certificates of your relevant degrees and diplomas and qualifications to the Council.

Affiliate Members are persons who do not meet the requirements for any of the membership categories above, but who wish to maintain contact with the engineering and / or environmental fraternity and whose participation and contributions, in the opinion of the Council, will be to the benefit of the Institute.

  1. Study the definitions of classes of corporate membership and ensure that you meet the requirements for the class of membership you intend to apply for.
  2. Complete FORM A (Download Form A).
  3. Submit the completed FORM A to the Council.

Student members are any persons studying full time and wish to maintain contact with the engineering and / or environmental fraternity.

  1. Study the definitions of classes of corporate membership and ensure that you meet the requirements for the class of membership you intend to apply for.
  2. Complete FORM C (Download Form C).
  3. Submit the completed FORM C to the Council.

Membership fees

Membership fees:

According to our constitution, all members, except Honorary Fellows, are required to pay an entry fee as well as an annual subscription to maintain their membership. This ensures the continued support and growth of our organisation, fostering a committed and active community.

Resignations:

If you decide to resign from the Institute you may do so by submitting a written resignation to the Council together with any moneys due by you. Your name will be removed from the Roll of the Institute. At the discretion of the Council you may be re-admitted to membership on payment of such fees as the Council may determine.
